Unlike the writer and photographer sides of me, as I teacher I have extensive training and it is what I do professionally. You can view and download my full resume here, but to summarize:

I have a Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on teaching literacy and English as a Second Language. My undergraduate studies focused on Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in Elementary Education and a focus on Special Education.

I am certified by the state of Texas to teach:

Elementary Grades 1 - 8

Generic Special Education Grades PK - 12

I taught for 8 years in Cairo, Egypt - a variety of ages, abilities, and subject areas. Currently - and as I have for the past 7 years - I work online as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the College of Education at the University of Texas at Arlington.

        Author Visits

Although I left teaching in a classroom to pursue writing books, I love visiting students and sharing my book with them, both as an author and a teacher, but also as a fellow writer-in-progress.

Depending on the what the schools or teachers want, I either read excerpts from the book followed by a Question-and-Answer session, or - if I am able to coordinate with teachers before my visits - I plan a session focused around my book and a particular literacy skill that a certain group of students may be studying. For example, I’ve led sessions on the writing process for older students and others on specifics such as using alliteration.

I have read my book to students at Cairo American College, the Canadian International School of Egypt, and the American International School in Egypt. I also had the pleasure of sharing my book with students in Havenwood Preschool and Padonia International Elementary School in Maryland, U.S.A.

I offer private and group lessons to children aged 7 and up who are being homeschooled  in Dahab. I work with official American homeschool curriculum and material (those provided directly from a school district in the States or other programs such as The Calvert School), but I also design individual programs tailored to meet a child’s needs.

My speciality is of course teaching Reading, Writing, and English as a Second Language, but I also offer lessons in Mathematics and Art. Science and Social Studies support is available as well.
